I'm back this time with a 16s! Je suis de retour avec cette fois une 16s!

Hi, after searching for a while across France with help from Fab, I managed to purchase an Oettinger 16s on my doorstep.. abut 2 hours away.

It's probably the first 16s to arrive in UK back in the 90's and has spent the last 13 years off the road so will need alot of bits upgrading, like the fuel system for starters. Also rust has crept in a little underneath near the rear axle mounting points and has some minor surface rust around the engine bay.

she has been in 2 magazines in the 90's with previous owner, plus i've found a couple of pics taken in 1996/7 when she was taken to Gti International..

plans are a full respray this winter, It has a black and grey stripe interior but i'm all ready halfway in sourcing the original red and black seats. Its not running yet, turns over ok but i've ordered some new fuel lines from rear to front so hope that helps the fuel problem and then enjoy.. unfortunately I have to work abroad for 6 months next year during the summer so wont get to much use out of her but if the timing is right i would love to come over to Dijon or wherever you guys are meeting next year.

  Salut, après avoir cherché pendant un certain temps à travers la France avec l'aide de Fab, j'ai réussi à acheter une 16s Oettinger devant ma porte .. buter à 2 heures.

C'est probablement les premiers à arriver 16s au Royaume-Uni dans les années 90 et a passé les 13 dernières années sur la route aura donc besoin beaucoup de bits de mise à niveau, comme le système de carburant pour les débutants. Aussi la rouille s'est glissée dans un sous peu près les points de montage d'essieu arrière et a un peu de rouille de surface mineure dans le compartiment moteur.

elle a été dans 2 magazines dans les années 90 avec le propriétaire précédent, plus j'ai trouvé quelques photos prises en 1996/7 quand elle a été prise à Gti international ..

plans sont un respray plein cet hiver, il a un intérieur rayé noir et gris mais je suis toute prête à mi-chemin dans le sourcing des sièges d'origine rouge et noir. Sa ne fonctionne pas encore, se retourne ok mais j'ai commandé des nouvelles conduites de carburant de l'arrière vers l'avant de sorte espoir qui aide le problème de carburant et ensuite profiter .. malheureusement, je dois travailler à l'étranger pendant 6 mois l'année prochaine durant l'été afin n'obtiendrez pas d'une grande utilité sur d'elle, mais si c'est le bon moment je voudrais bien venir à Dijon ou chaque fois que vous les gars sont réunis l'an prochain.

Shame on me , i'm just discovering your post today ! Unfortunatly the guy from Brittania, the owner of the white one, has wait for maybe 3 weeks or a month to call me back (guess he tried to sell it at a better price ?). So, it's a good thing that you get this metalic schwartz near of your place.

You get some work to do but it's worth the pain as it's quite a rare car !

Please feel free to ask if U need a piece of advice, and feel free to post new pixs as well ;=)

hi fab, the resto is going ahead, these were photos from 2 weeks ago, and i've done a lot since.. i will surprise you with some more delightful photos soon because all the welding has been completed and now it's rust free.

i showed the worst parts of the shell in those pics, but both arches needed doing too..

cibie lights, the site listed in here by sgane, won't deliver to UK..

and the logos are missing front and back.. any ideas where to get these from?

For the delivery in UK actually it's not a problem : I need to order just one cibié for me, so I could buy 3 and send 2 for you in Uk.

Unfortunatly for the monograms U can't find it new for age... U'll have to watch ebay.fr there's some auction somtimes on this item. U can find some copies but I can't say anything about the quality of this stuff.

Heureusement elle à l'air complète,à part l'intérieur pas de la bonne couleur
et la calandre qui apparemment n'a jamais été d'origine mais rien de grave.

Bravo à lui car il en faut du courage pour sauver une auto dans cet état.

Used to read GOLF MAG from UK during the 90's but have never seen any GTI16S (except a white one in the ads at the end of the mag).

Would you mind to open a post about your 8 Valves Oettinger which is rarer ;=) in France than a 16V ?

Hi, i've been going through the paperwork and found a dyno print out from just before the owner took the car off the road..
if you see anything interesting let me know, but believe the engine is still putting out its original power after the tune up..






@FAB, yes i would be very interested in a pair of cibie lights, i will arange a paypal transfer when you want it, just let me know how much.. and i will start writing up something about the 8 soupapes soon..

I do translate the Doc Bollindger post : Doc may have some stickers "16 soupapes" for the wings. He'll check and tell you.

For rear and front badges " GTI 16S" it might be easy to find some copies or refab, but it's quite difficult to find original badges of the 80's...

thanks fab for the translation, I'm currently learning french at home because I will probably be working in francophone Afrique in the future.. it will come in handy here also.. ..are you ready to buy the cibie lights?, i can send you a paypal when you are..

Merci docteurboellidger, J'ai acheté les autocollants latéraux hors leboncoin, donc merci pour l'offre, mais j'espère pour s'adapter à ces à mes ailes.. and to Fab, i don't mind if i can track down the front and rear replica badges, I think the originals will be near impossible so i won't hold my breath..

I have found a nice red stripe interior and a lovely Oettinger steering wheel that i prefer over the original.. I will clean the engine and also take out the old ceramic fuse board and wiring and fit the 1983 CE1 spec. loom. I am looking for good condition 15" ATS cups and will be fitting the Happich rear windows and Kamei rear soiler. I know some may dislike the modifications but they are only period modifications and 99.9% of people will not know the difference..

I have to go away with work for 6/7 months so the 16s is nuggled up into my garage for the summer. I have recieved her back from my friend workshop/paintshop.. i'm quite happy with the welding but have a small problem with the paint. There's a lot of orange peel and the shade of LP9V is too dark, almost black so will go to a local sprayers to blow over in a better shade of LP9V.

When i return i will have to clean out or change the petrol tank as it is full of rust. I have a stainless steel fuel filler neck to go on and brand new braided fuel lines that should keep her running for many decades to come. I have a couple of loose wires in the fuse box that were not labelled so will have to get into the wiring diagrams to work out where they go, also a few wires have snapped whilst my friend removed the motor so will have to go over them too.. brake servo and rear brake calipers will need sorting and then she will been ready to get roadworthy.. I will have a busy winter if my wife will let me..

I have the proper golf ball gearknob, and will remove the racing pedal..
blue floorpan is just a temporary measure whilst I wait for some more LP9V paint..


I'm still searching for the original grill, front cibie's, front and rear logos..
